The Fredericksburg Academic Boosters (FAB) Mentoring Program began in 1992 with 40 third graders from Fredericksburg Elementary School, Stonewall Elementary, and St. Mary’s. Each year our programs have expanded by adding grade levels and matching more students with mentors.
The need for additional mentors is always there, but we have a marvelous roster of very dedicated mentors. Many mentors opt to stay with their student for a number of years.
Students are referred by their teachers, counselors, administrators, parents, and occasionally the students themselves. Currently we have a Mentoring Coordinator for each campus:
Fredericksburg Elementary,
Fredericksburg Middle School,
Fredericksburg High School
Stonewall Elementary.
Currently, our coordinators were able to pair over 130 students with adult mentors! FAB partners with the Fredericksburg Independent School District and we are grateful for their strong backing and continued support.
In 2019, FAB took over the OTTER (Our Time Together to Enjoy Reading) program and has slowly been returning it to it's original purpose with one on one reading. We currently have about 40 readers, who work with one or two students to encourage reading.
In 2022, FAB incorporated the "Lunch Bunch" program, which is a group mentoring/educational program held on the Middle and High School campuses. Twice a month, two or three professional adults from the community run a topic driven session over the lunch period encouraging good self esteem, friendship and goal setting for the future. While one on one mentoring is our main focus, we find in the middle and high school years, group mentoring with a focus is more effective for some students. We thank everyone who makes these three programs possible! Thank you to ourMentors for being people who care about children and their future, thank you FISD, and special thanks to our own dedicated board and staff!
